jonathan's adapted story: the woodpecker

There was once a small woodpecker called woody who was from a loving family. Its father had taught it the importance of hard work, and so woody decided to build its own nest.

Every morning as soon as the sun would rise, Woody would wake up and start to peck and peck at the tree because it wanted to build its nest there. It would peck all day, and only stop as the sun was setting. It was working really hard. A few weeks passed like this and Woody realised it had still not managed to build a nest.

Sitting high on a tree was the oldest, wisest woodpecker in the forest. It had been watching Woody over the weeks, pecking away. It flew down to join Woody and to ask it what it was doing. Woody explained to the wise old woodpecker that it was trying to build a beautiful nest and despite all the hard work in pecking from morning until night, it was not getting anywhere.

The wise old woodpecker smiled and said to Woody, "Maybe you will succeed it you focus more. Along with all your hard work you also need to think a little smart, otherwise all your hard work will not be useful."

Woody did not understand this and said to the wise old woodpecker, "But I have been very focused, pecking from morning until night."

"Ah, yes," said the wise old woodpecker, "I realise this, but have you been pecking at the same tree and the same spot each time?"

Woody looked around and realised there were many small holes in many different trees all over the forest. Every day it had been working hard but every day it had been at a different place. And so even though Woody had done a lot of hard work, it had not archieved the results it wanted. Woody realised that it had worked hard but had forgotten to work smart. It had been persistent but it had not been focused. And this was the reason Woody was not succeeding at creating what it wanted.
